I find myself becoming more and more intrigued by herbs and botanicals, and their healing abilities. So I decided to pick out 15 of my favorite herbs and share what Rosemary Gladstar (one of my favorite herbalists) says about the herbs in her book Medicinal Herbs. I highly urge you to have this book on your shelf for great home remedies. Here are the first 5 beneficial herbs… part 1!
5 Beneficial Herbs… Part 1

Basil
- 150+ varieties
- Consumption eases gas, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting
- Helps irritability, fatigue, anxiety, insomnia, and depression
- Anti-bacterial properties
- Smashed basil leaves (poultice) can be applied to bug bites to ease sting, swelling, and itching
Garlic
- Highly versatile and medicinal
- Stimulates production of white blood cells
- Boosts immune function
- Potent anti-septic and antibiotic properties
- Used to treat intestinal parasites and circulatory problems
- Best eaten raw for greatest medicinal benefit
- Honey-Garlic Infusion: fill a clean 1/2-pint mason jar with whole, organic garlic cloves. add locally sourced raw honey to cover. Tighten lid. Place in cool, dark spot. Shake daily for 4 weeks. Eat a garlic clove and/or teaspoon of honey for immunity boost and cold/flu aid
Oregano
- Relieves nervousness
- Calms irritability
- Helps insomnia due to tension and/or anxiety
- Powerful anti-septic and disinfectant
- Fights infections, bacterial and viral
- Strong antioxidant
Thyme
- Excellent cold and cough remedy
- Used for any chest complaint
- Powerful disinfectant
- Used in anti-fungal remedies
- High in antioxidants
- Cough Syrup: 2-4 oz. fresh thyme, 1 qt. water, 1 c. honey in pot; simmer; reduce by half; strain; store in fridge with lid on up to 4 weeks; take 1 tsp. every hour
Sage
- Helps throat issues (sore throat, tonsillitis, laryngitis; and also sore gums and canker sores
- Treats hot flashes in menopausal women and night sweats in men
- Helps lower cholesterol levels
- Bitter tonic for the liver
- Helps rebuild vitality and strength after an illness
- Acts as a stress reliever
- Helps nursing mothers “dry up” their milk supply
- Use in deodorant to help prevent sweating
- Cold and flu fighter
- Astringent, anti-septic and anti-inflammatory
