Like I said in last week’s post, I find myself becoming more and more intrigued by herbs and botanicals, and their healing abilities. Last week, I shared 5 of my favorite herbs and share what Rosemary Gladstar (one of my favorite herbalists) says about the herbs in her book Medicinal Herbs. 5 Beneficial Herbs… Part 2
Rosemary
- Improves memory and concentration
- Eases headaches, migraines, and mild depression
- Stimulant for mood and circulation
- High in antioxidants
- Treats inflammation: arthritis and joint pain/damage
- Excellent digestive aid
Ginger
- Effective remedy for cramps, nausea, morning sickness, and motion sickness
- Warming and effective decongestant; helps sore throats
- Helps activate the immune system
- Reduces inflammation and helps repair damaged joints and cartilage- excellent for arthritis and joint pain
- Can lower triglyceride levels linked to heart disease and diabetes
- Helpful for the digestive system
- Do not confuse with wild ginger, which can be toxic in large amounts
Spearmint
- Sweeter, milder, and less pungent than peppermint
- Better for children than peppermint
- Mix with catnip to ease fever
- Mix with lemon balm to ease hyperactive and anxious children
- Mild stimulant with warming and cooling tendencies
- Eases nausea and is used to freshen breath
- Delicious eaten raw in salads, smoothies
Aloe Vera
- Must have in every household, easy to grow
- Powerful burn healer and soothes sunburns
- Blocks 20-30% of UV rays
- Soothing and pain relieving which promotes healing and tissue repair
- Helps: insect bites and stings, rashes, eczema, acne, skin ulcers, and inflammation from poison ivy and poison oak
- Works as a powerful natural laxative
Lavender
- Harvest when buds are just starting to open
- Anti-depressant: relaxing, calming, and uplifting; Relieves tension, stress, and insomnia
- Anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-septic
- Treats infections: staph, strep, colds, flu, fungal, yeast
- Disinfects and heals scrapes, wounds, and burns
- Anti-spasmatic: helps stomach cramps, IBS, and Crohn’s disease
