It all started 8 years ago with homemade laundry detergent.

A marriage, 2 kids, 2 dogs, 5 chickens, a new house, and 12 acres later, we are full-fledged homesteaders, always eager to learn and do more.

So what do we do that makes us homesteaders (besides having a bit of land and a small flock of egg-laying chickens)?

  • We have a huge garden, grow a wide variety of fruits and veggies, & can or freeze our fresh produce.
  • We have a large blueberry patch.
  • We have a vineyard.
  • We grow elderberries.
  • We have the beginnings of an orchard with pear, apple, & peach trees.
  • We have a pathetic raspberry patch that is in dire need of help… & friends! (:
  • We have wild blackberries & huckleberries at the edge of our woods.
  • We harvest venison & small game in the nearby state game lands.
  • We dream of raising meat birds, cattle, & pigs.

And wait, there’s more! That’s just the food, folks!

  • We (still) make our own laundry detergent and dishwasher detergent.
  • We use dryer balls instead of dryer sheets or fabric softener, & plan to install a clotheslines in the spring.
  • We make our own soap, shampoo, conditioner, & body wash.
  • We make our own make-up, deodorant, perfume, lotion, lip balm, toothpaste, & teeth whitener.
  • We use family cloth, mama cloth, the diva cup, cloth napkins, & cloth tissues.
  • We only use glass, stainless steel, or cast iron in the kitchen.
  • We cook from scratch as much as possible.
  • We make our own cleaning products.
  • We reduce, reuse, and recycle.
  • We despise any and all types of plastic.

While we do and make A LOT, please know that it has taken us 7 years to get to this point. We didn’t just wake up one day and change every aspect of our lives. It has taken us a longggggg time. Also, it isn’t necessary to do every single one of these things^ (or a bazillion other things that homesteaders do that maybe we don’t yet, or that I just haven’t mentioned) to make you a homesteader.

You can be a “homesteader” by just doing 1 or 2 of these things^.

Homesteading is a way of life, a frame of mind. It’s all about being more self-sufficient.

We Are the Place to Learn to Homestead

Our goal is to show you everything we do around the homestead: self-sufficiency, growing food, frugal living, from-scratch cooking and recipes, self-sufficiency, DIY’ing, going off the grid, raising animals, prepping, tips, tricks, our successes, and probably lots of our failures, too. We believe that getting back to our roots, and yours, will help clear our minds resulting in a more peaceful, simpler life. One that your great-great grandpa would’ve been proud of!

HANG ON! What about photography?

I know, it’s kind of nutso in this internet-obsessed era to have a website combine two niches (in my case- homesteading and photography). But ya know what? I don’t give a damn.

I grew up with a camera in my hands, but it wasn’t until grad school that I really became passionate about photography. My adviser allowed me to do an internship for credit with an amazing local photographer that I really admired. The internship required over 200 hours of photography and editing time. I loved every minute of it, so much so that I never left! Even after I got my Master’s in English, I stayed on with the photographer and became his employee.

As life moved on, so did I. I met my man, moved to the country, had some babies, got married, built a house, became a homesteader, and left my photography job; but photography as a passion has always been right here with me.

I am so happy to say that I am keeping the camera in my hands as much as possible nowadays and I would love to capture some memories for you and your family!
