Detox Your Life: “Ditch It” Day 6

Ditch Your Deodorant

I learned about the danger of aluminum in deodorant and antiperspirant a longggg time ago. It has always made me very uneasy, but as a teenager, I didn’t know that I could make my own. And, to be honest, back then- there really weren’t safer alternatives on the market like there are now.

It isn’t just the aluminum in the deodorant and/or antiperspirant that is dangerous toward your health. There are other hidden dangers lurking in them as well.

Why You Should Ditch Deodorant

  1. Most deodorants and antiperspirants contain aluminum, which are thought to block sweat ducts and pores, mimics estrogen, may aid in causing breast cancer, and even cause Alzheimer’s disease. BUT those findings have never been scientifically confirmed. I’d definitely keep an eye on any research that is done concerning aluminum in deodorants and anti-antiperspirants.
  2. Deodorants and antiperspirants also often contain parabens, which are used to prevent the growth of bacteria or mold. Scientists are finding that parabens impact the endocrine system, reproductive system, central nervous system, poses developmental issues in children, and can cause cancer, and even harm people’s immune systems.
  3. Additionally, the fragrance used in them is harmful and often contains formaldehyde and phthalates. (Are you seeing a trend? Think back to when I encouraged y’all to ditch dryer sheets and air freshener.) The artificial fragrances used in hair products, skin products, home products are not safe.
  4. Some deodorants and antiperspirants contain an ingredient called triclosan, which is known to change how hormones are regulated in the body. Triclosan research has also found that it can cause allergic reactions, weight gain, fetal development in pregnant women, thyroid issues, skin irritation.

What To Use Instead

  • Nothing! I know, I know. You think you will smell. But you can do things to stop that- like washing your armpits a few times per day. You wash your hands several times per day to keep them clean, why not do your pits, too?
  • Change your diet if your pits are stinky. Foods can alter the smells we give off (think garlic and onions, alcohol, spicy foods). Add fresh foods like herbs, cucumber, watermelon, and celery to your diet. These foods are known to help us stay hydrated, diluting the smell of our sweat.
  • Use safer brands that do not use triclosan, parabens, phthalates, or aluminum. I love Crystal brand.
  • Make your own deodorant. There are so many recipes out there. Ingredients often include  cocoa and/or shea butter, coconut oil, baking soda, arrowroot, Himalayan salt, witch hazel, apple cider vinegar, etc. Experiment with each recipe and see what works best for you! If you’d like me to share the recipes I’ve used in the past, drop a comment down below! I’d be happy to do that for y’all!
